Are we celebrating the right Halloween?

I got into a conversation with a friend of mine last year abut how she doesn't feel right about the way American culture is obsessed with the dead and the undead and that thus she has steered her daughter away from Halloween celebration because of it.

We are pretty obsessed - we've got vampire and zombie movies and tv shows out the yin-yang! What does it mean when millions of people across the nation are obsessing over the whims, looks and attractions of undead protagonists?

Vampires, although immortal, and possessed of super strength aren't superheroes cuz they need to suck the material life force out of living beings to survive...
